All Martin had to do was mention The Cavedogs to make me all nostalgic for the late 80s Boston rock scene, triggering memories of my seeing Galaxie 500 perform from the loading dock of The Coop and The Blake Babies play to a crowd of 30-40 people in a Harvard dining hall.
This is a picture I took of the Cavedogs, circa 1989, in the back room of T.T. the Bear's for an article I wrote about them in my high school newspaper. I wish I'd been able to go up to Boston for the reunion show they did a few weeks ago, but I did order this CD to refresh my memories of what a fun band they were onstage and in person. Track down a used copy of the out-of-print power pop classic Joyrides For Shut-Ins -- you won't be disappointed.
I didn't save playlists from or record nearly as many of my college radio shows as you seem to have, but I'm certain that "Taking Up Space" appeared in 70-80% of my weekly two-hour shows for the five years I was there.
The other 20-30% invariably included one of "Leave Me Alone," "Here Comes Rosie," "Sorrow," "Glass Eye," or for yucks their version of "What's New Pussycat?" I only ever played one song per band on my show, so it's unlikely that any of the other good Cavedogs songs ever got played over that "shortlist" of my favorites.
